“After a lengthy journey, we finally got there. Prior to going there, I did my research so that I was aware what to expect. I found the landscape and surroundings incredible. I couldn’t wait to get in! Despite all the advices not to see the velodrome from the stalls, I ran up the stairs to see what -to our surprise- was an extensive steep track. And here was when my heart stopped. The first thought that ran through my mind was: “Lord, I will die young.”

When most of the other cyclists had arrived, we entered the velodrome. Maybe the fear was showing on my face as many other Slipstreamers came to have a comforting chat, and to give me helpful advice. In the beginning, we were all joined to have a safety briefing where everything was thoroughly explained. Then we were separated into two groups with two different coaches: Keith and Dave. Keith took the experienced riders while Dave took the novices. As I had never done this before, I joined Dave’s group.

Overcoming her fears!

Overcoming her fears, enjoying the ride!

I won’t lie, the first try lap left me feeling panicked; but then after the second lap I felt more confident and stronger. Without even noticing, I went faster and faster. Instant gushes of wind came from nowhere and I felt adrenaline rush through my body. Have you ever been on a roller-coaster? It’s hard to explain how I felt speeding down the ramp – but being on a roller-coaster comes as a close second.

There were many technical things to be learnt and Dave was an excellent coach, coaching us through them. He had the patience and his experienced eye didn’t miss any mistakes we made. With encouragement from him, soon, we looked like ‘legit’ professionals. Four and a half hours went before we were able to say “Slipstreamers”.

I came off the track all smiles and buzzing for more – by the way I already booked a space in the September track sessions. As this was Keith’s last session he finally decided to take a break. We all gathered around to say our final goodbyes to him.

Overall, everyone had a great time at the session, especially me – even if I was exhausted. I will highly recommend to anyone to try it.”

Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience Anastasia!
