Youth Winter Series 2015, Round 3, Saturday 24th January 2015
The Hillingdon Slipstreamers Youth Winter Series is well under way, with round 3 completed last weekend and 2 more to go. Enjoy the following reports by siblings Ollie and Maddie, both of whom raced on the 24th. Ollie’s experience is of particular interest, and highlights the important of the correct gearing – visit the Rider Resources section of this website if you aren’t sure about why this is so important!
Oliver’s Round 3 Experience
My first U12 Race
“I felt a bit nervous before the winter series race on Saturday, as this was my first U12 race and I haven’t been cycling as much lately. I didn’t think I would be able to stay with the main bunch. I was a bit scared when I was riding in the middle of the bunch, but I am glad I did as it was a good experience and has given me confidence to do it again. I dropped off on the last lap but I was ok with that, as I felt I had done a good race. One very important thing to remember: GET YOUR GEARS CHECKED BEFORE YOU RACE! I hadn’t raced in ages so never got mine checked before, and it turned out that I got DQ’d as I hadn’t restricted my gears. Although I never used the gear and I wasn’t placed so it didn’t really upset me, it would have if I had of won or done better! I am looking forward to this Saturday’s race.”
Maddie’s Round 3 Experience
“It was a really good race for me because I have not done many races and I only passed my Bronze last month. On the start line there was one girl next to me, who had beaten me before at a cyclo-cross race, I thought she would beat me and be really good. When we started I stayed on her wheel and then I went past her on the hill and caught up with Angel. We worked together for a little while and then I got away from her, I think she was tired. I think I won the girls race but the results aren’t out yet. Next time I am going to try hard and stay with the boys!”
Well done both of you – fantastic reports! If you’d like to race, there are 2 to go so visit our Calendar page for full details.
