The London West GHS District Championship Time Trial took place on Sunday, 26th June. This year, the event was hosted by Hillingdon Slipstreamers. We had a strong field of 20 Youth Riders into this year’s event – with 18 riders starting. One of the favourites to do well this year, Ieuan Woods (Charlotteville) unfortunately crashed out at the National Youth Series the day before, and was not in good enough state to race. Altay Shaw (Hillingdon Slipstreamers) was unfortunate enough to fall foul of the p*nct*re fairy, putting an end to what looked like a powerful start by the rider in his first year of Time Trial competition.
We had 6 female entries this year, of which 5 qualified to go through to the national final later in the year. Amber Jospeh (PMR @Toachim House) competing in the competition for the first time lost out to Savannah Hewson (Hillingdon Slipstreamers) by a little over 30 seconds. Savannah gains entry to the GHS National Final for the second time.
The boys had a little more competition, demonstrated by the close call on the team qualification. A strong ride by the Palmer Park Velo trio of Troy Loxley (24.29), Matthew Coulson (25.06) and Arthur Boulton (26.48) was looking good enough to qualify with a combined time of 01:16:23. That was until a very commanding (and extremely noisy) finish by Peter Hewson meant that the Slipstreamer team took the available places by a mere 26 seconds, with a combined effort of 01:15:57.
However, the ride of the day was taken by ex-Slipstreamer Jamie Wimborne who managed to sustain a 25mph average over an uneasy undulating course. Jamie pulled out a very credible 23:59 putting a 15 second and 30 second advantage respectively over his nearest rivals. Well done Jamie!
