Royce Murphy, one of our Volunteer Coaches, will be offering pedal stroke analysis and bike fitting for interested Gold A, B & C riders. The objectives will be to analyse the rider’s pedalling technique, looking for any symmetry problems or weaknesses that could be improved; and to help any riders having difficulty with their bike fit or suffering from discomfort on the saddle.

Pedal Stroke Analysis

The polar chart image illustrates the type of pedal stroke analysis that will be done. Right/left symmetry, the angle at which the rider is achieving max power, how much power is lost at the top/bottom of their pedal stroke, and how consistent their pedal stoke is throughout the session are examples of what Royce and co will be looking for.

The two polar charts shown contrast an experienced and efficient cyclist on the top with a relative beginner on the bottom. With this analysis, it can be determined which training sessions will help the rider improve their technique.

Bike Fit

For riders concerned about their bike fit or feeling uncomfortable on their saddle, a pressure map of their saddle can be done, as well as an analysis of their position on the bike while they are riding on the turbo.

The pressure maps show how an experienced rider whose position on the bike looked OK was actually sitting to far forward on their saddle, and the saddle was too high for an effective pedal stroke. As a result, they were suffering from numbness and excessive rocking on the saddle. The “before & after” pressure maps show the difference made by simply moving their saddle down by 0.5 centimetre and forward by 1.5 centimetres.

How Do I Book?

All of this will be done utilising a mobile cycle fitness testing and bike fitting studio, which includes a Wattbike, video bike fit analysis and saddle pressure mapping tools. The studio will be at the circuit on the following Saturday mornings:

  • 18 April: 08:00 – 12:00
  • 2 May: 08:00 – 12:00

Riders may sign up for 30 minute Wattbike analysis OR a 60 minute Bike Fit analysis.  The riders need to be over 1.52 meters (5 feet) to use the Wattbike, but it is feasible to do bike and saddle fit analysis on the rider’s own bike.
