Slipstreamers Excel at Inter-Regional Road Championships, Redbridge, 26-28 September 2014
We recently reported that 3 Slipstreamers, Charles Page, Harriet Mellor and Carl Jolly, were selected to represent the Central Region in the Central Road Team of 8 riders, and were due to race at the IRRC at the Redbridge Hog Hill circuit last weekend. This event comes hot off the heels of the very successful track event where we had the same riders, plus Lorna Bowler, also represent the Central Region at the Sainsbury School Games in Manchester (read about their experiences by clicking here if you missed it previously).
The IRRC was held over three days and consisted of a criterium on Friday, street sprints and team time trials on Saturday, and road racing on Sunday. The who’s who of U16 road racing was at this event, with the top 52 boys and 52 girls in the UK competing for the ultimate accolades! Throughout the weekend, there were some intensive laps and gruelling hill climbs; but a few mechanicals and crashes notwithstanding, the Central team put on a sterling effort overall, riding extremely well and not giving up even when the pressure was piled on heavily! The racing was incredibly exciting; with the Sunday races particularly nail biting as the points totals between the Central and Scotland teams were very close!Needless to say, thanks to the fighting spirit of the racers, Central were awarded a well-deserved and hard-earned second spot on the podium in what was a very tough competition! From what we have heard, we do believe this is the best ever Central Region placing – what an incredible achievement for our Slipstreamers to have been part of!Well done Carl, Charles and Harriet – we are all immensely proud of you!
